1. pine street barber shop

serving oregon hill residents and beyond since 1981, pine street barber shop is a lovely neighborhood spot that happens to cut hair. it does the hair of people “from a to z,” says the owner ~ babies, the elderly, teenagers ~ anyone is welcome at pine street barber shop and will leave satisfied with the friendly service, cheerful atmosphere, and a shiny new hairstyle. corporate ceos, students, pastors, and oregon hill locals are among some listed customers.

inside and outside, the shop is exquisitely nostalgic from the classic striped barber pole to the vintage chairs and sinks to the glossy tiled ceiling. embroidered artwork hangs on the walls, and there are plenty of magazines to thumb through like in any barber shop.

the owner lists the shops goals as “number 1: have fun. and number 2: have money.” what makes the shop unique is its success despite its seemingly random location in oregon hill. “our business comes mostly from attraction rather than promotion,” he adds. and isn’t that the goal of most local businesses, after all? well, it looks like pine street barber shop has perfected it.
